About the artist

Zoe Klink’s practice is distinguished by a rich repertoire of distinctive visual languages, articulated through her chosen medium of acrylic paint.  Klink’s compositions are painterly homages to everyday photography; Adopting the perspective of the photographer, Klink invites viewers into intimate family scenes, moments of friendship, and discoveries seen through the gaze of the tourist. Klink prefers to source her motifs from stacks of old photographs. Forgotten images, long detached from their original contexts, are given new meaning in her hands and leave behind their photorealistic existence.

Klink’s work occupies the liminal space between memory and imagination, between what once was and what might have been. Her paintings reconcile the documentary authenticity of found photographs with the artist’s own imaginative interventions.  Almost like a puppeteer, she shifts, enlarges, reduces, extracts, and recontextualizes her figures. Disparate elements are juxtaposed to create tension and construct narratives, rooted in the present. At the same time, original details remain, offering glimpses into bygone eras and distant places while infusing Klink’s works with a subtle sense of nostalgia.

A defining characteristic of Klink’s paintings is their vibrant and dynamic chromatic language. Saturated, luminous palettes are informed by the artist’s perception of her surroundings. Ordinary objects, such as a string of birthday bunting or a postage stamp, are transformed into catalysts for unexpected and expressive colour relationships, revealing the potential of the everyday.

Klink’s work is equally distinguished by its pronounced formal contrasts: between shape and gesture, plane and line, precision and spontaneity. Recurring motifs, including fragments of text, fluid drips, expansive pools of paint and transparent brushwork characterize many of her earlier compositions. More recent works introduce granular areas of colour that allude to the low-resolution imagery of analogue photography. Thickly applied paint and richly textured surfaces have likewise become central to her current practice, reinforcing the dialogue between photographic reference and painterly materiality that lies at the heart of her work.
